Clarice Cliff Goes Purple!

The inspiration for my table this week came from my little sister, Judy. She bought me 4 purple Royal Staffordshire bread and butter plates by Clarice Cliff in the Tonquin pattern for only $1 each at her local thrift store in southern Vermont. Thank you, Judy! Purple transferware is hard to find almost anywhere here in the middle of nowhere, so I had to resort to eBay! I have seen the color described as plum, mulberry and purple...I think I read that it is actually referred to as purple by the experts...someone correct me if I am mistaken!

To enlarge any picture, just click on it.

The Tonquin pattern was first produced in the 1920's, in Burslem, England.

Unlike some other china patterns, the pattern is the same on pieces...that is one reason I don't have many full sets of dishes...I am the queen of mix and match!

This pattern makes for a nice place setting.

Bread/butter plate that started the whole table!

The mulberry colored water glasses were purchased at TJMaxx a few years ago and the pale pink wine stems were from Savers a couple years ago.

Individual gravy boat with underplate will be used for salad dressing. It is really tiny, about 5½ inches long, 1¼ inches wide at the top and almost 3 inches tall.

The little pitcher, almost 3 inches tall, will also be used for salad dressing.

The sterling (George K Webster Co., which became a subsidiary of Reed & Barton in 1950) salt and pepper shakers were bought about a month ago at Savers for $3.99, they were in a bag with a couple of round candles. I had no idea they were sterling until I got home and started cleaning them.

The purple coffee pot was a gift from my friend, Patty. The hyacinths are from my yard...oh, the smell in the dining room is heavenly! The silverplated candlesticks are from ARC Thrift Store a couple years ago.

Stacked plates...dinner, salad and soup bowl.

The silverplated napkin rings came from Burlington Coat Factory about 20 years ago.

The sterling flatware is Oneida Afterglow circa 1958.

Overall of the table.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog, I appreciate each one of you! I will be linking up with Between Naps On The Porch for Tablescape Thursday. Thank you for hosting, Susan. Please click on the link to BNOTP to see many, many more inspirational tables.

Burple is unusual, but makes for a very regal setting. Silver goes with purple like salt goes with pepper; nothing better.

How pretty this whole scene looks!!! Those plates are BEAUTIFUL & you really scored big-time on the sterling S&P shakers. Lucky-Dog!

Someone in blogland did a purple table & dedicated it to Liz Taylors beautiful eyes. Your soft colors reminded me of that. Very nicely done!

I also thought the table had a REGAL look to it. I did not know that purple was difficult to find. I learn something new everyday! What a find on the salt and pepper shakers, too. Keep on doin' what it is you are doin' M. I love it!

What beautiful dishes and what a great find from your sister. I'm glad you were able to find more dishes to match!

Oh my goodness, what I wouldn't give to have some of those dishes. I live in the middle of nowhere too so I don't think I've ever seen purple ones in the flesh.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've seen them online before either.

These are so pretty!! My daughters would both love them.

Absolutely stunning! This is the transferware that should reside at PURPLE Chocolat Home. I don't have any purple transferware - maybe Ebay fun is in my future! The edge pattern on those plates is just amazing, it looks beaded and scalloped. I love them. Those dark purple glasses are gorgeous too. We don't ever get any great glasses at our TJ's. Isn't it fun to pull out things from 20 years ago, like those wonderful napkin rings. Absolutely gorgeous.

I adore Clarice Cliff. I can't believe your sister found those plates for $1 each. That is absolutely amazing. She's lucky that I wasn't there. I would have had no choice but to mug her! :)

And what a gorgeous table they make. You are so lucky!

Marigene, it's really fun for me to see this tablescape today. I recently shopped at the antique show at Round Top, Texas and came home with my first pieces of Tonquin. Love the unusual purple color of your pieces. Mine are in the brown color. I first found 3 napkin rings in this pattern, then one of the little pitchers like you have. I was very excited! This is a wonderful pattern in either color. ~ Sarah

I am another one who loves the purple transferware dishes.
I have seen them in high end antiques stores and could buy a new piece of furniture for what they had the dishes priced.
I always always amazied when people find things like that in goodwill and thrift stores.
I crave a good thrift store and there is none in my area

everytime I see purple transferware I will think of you

I don't decorate with a lot of purple, but this one is beautiful! Sophisticated. I could also see it use with a big splash of green hydrangeas on a bright white linen cloth. You've done a great job. Thank you for sharing your lovely design. Cherry Kay.

I am in purple heaven!!! Such beautiful china! It IS hard to find purple transferware, and you are one lucky girl!!! Your sister set a dangerous precedent when she bought those little plates for you! :-) What a terrific bargain on the sterline S&Ps!!! Somebody apparently just didn't have a clue what they were doing! SCORE!!! I also want to thank you for stopping by my blog with your well wishes. My husband is such a sweetie to have kept things going for me. I'm able to sit up in bed now, and he has provided me a (very slow!) laptop to help me reconnect with my world! I hope to be back on my feet a little tomorrow and 100% in the pink by this time next week. I wish you and yours a wonderful and safe weekend. Take care, Marigene!
