Brown and White Transferware

Mother Nature apparently hasn't received word that we are into the third week of September and it hasn't cooled off here on the prairie...today is supposed to hit 92°! I am so ready for cooler weather.

While in Vermont last month I stopped at a little antique store in the town I grew up in. I found some pretty white and brown transferware plates. I believe they are from the aesthetic period.l The maker is Henry Alcock and Co. and the pattern is Lynton. They were 25% of the marked price which made me very happy. I also bought blue transferware plates that I will show you at a later date.

This gorgeous ecru crocheted tablecloth was also purchased the same day at a small second hand store in a nearby town. I hurried to the table it was on to see what the price was...looked and looked, but couldn't find one. My sister, Judy, found the owner and asked what the price was...she said $20...my heart was beating really fast as I thought it would be at least 5x higher...I had the nerve to ask if she would be willing to take $15 for it...she thought for a minute and said "yes, I got this in a box with lots of other things. I hurried and paid for it and left before she could change her mind on the price! I hate to think of how many hours someone put into crocheting it, many, many more than $15 worth. I like to think it now has a good home!

I used woven chargers topped with Wedgwood Hedge Rose plain white plates, then the Lynton luncheon plate.

The flatware is my trusty champagne Madeline from World Market. They go with just about anything.
I used a solid brown linen hemstitched napkins with a plain brown napkin ring.

The glassware is Noritake Provincial in brown.

The centerpiece is a simple cream colored pitcher with Russian Sage...that is really past it's prime and a couple of candlesticks.

I really appreciate you taking the time to visit today...thank you!

I, too, love that tablecloth and you really did get a good deal there. I can't imagine all the work that went into it. It is beautiful.

Love the mood you have created here.

I almost fainted, when I saw that tablecloth and, then, read your post. I cannot believe what you paid for that beauty! Oh, my... Your setting is so pretty (brown in my favorite color!) and those transfer plates are so different, than most of the ones that we usually see. I have been playing around with my brown ones, since I plan to use them at Thanksgiving. Your setting is an inspiration - thanks!

All I can say is that it's a good thing that you got to that store before I did. Granted, I would have had to travel a long way. The brown transferware is a beautiful pattern, and it is absolutely royal with the crochet cloth. Great score! Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay

I am so glad you have not gone away. Recently, when I have clicked on your blog, I get a not found message. On this table I particularly like the crocheted tablecloth as it reminds me of my great grandmother.

Marigene, you know I'm happy to see these plates. Great find! Still hot here and very humid. They say we'll have cooler temps by the weekend. Our first cold front to drop temps to love of 50s and high of 80s. I'll take that!
Thanks for sharing your pretty brown and white table.

Gorgeous!!! That is my all time favorite tablecloth - my mom had one and I wanted it - but my little brother sold it. I found one on ebay that has much smaller motifs - but my moms was the bigger one, so I'm still looking. I love how it looks on the table - and the price - amazing. I'm finding that the crocheted tablecloths are not as popular with younger people (more ironing than they care to do) so the prices are going down. Love the table settings.

Oh that cloth is gorgeous. The crocheted pattern stands out beautifully on your table. What a deal! Your brown transferware is a wonderful find. It's so pretty. Marigene, I love that you always know the pattern name of everything. Unless it is stamped on the bottom, I never can remember, i.e., stemware and flatware. you've even told me some of the pattern names for mine. I don't know how you do that. laurie
